What is Digital
Television?
The future method of broadcasting
television signals. Using state-of-the-art digital
technology, the new system is extremely flexible, allowing
the transmission of perfect pictures in a number of display
formats, including high- and standard-definition television,
in both conventional and wide-screen versions. The
accompanying audio is CD-quality with up to six channels of
surround sound. In the standard-definition mode,
broadcasters will be able to transmit up to six completely
separate programs simultaneously. In addition, broadcasters
will be able to send ancillary digital material.
Over 40 million households from a potential of 115+ million
non-digital televisions nationwide will lose service unless
they have cable or satellite service or a digital-to-analog
converter box called an ATSC Receiver.
Starting in January 2008, the federal government will offer
two free coupons worth $40 each to help defray the cost of
buying two Microprose MPI-500 converter boxes. Each
non-digital television in a household will need a converter
box.
The coupons will be good for 90 days. You have until March
31, 2009, to request the coupons. On the 17th February 2009
the new signals will require an ATSC Receiver... To receive
